Looking Up - Ascension drama
This is a funny but meaningful drama. It draws from the story of the Ascension in Acts 1, but applies it to today, and how we respond to the challenge of waiting for Jesus to return.
Script:
[One person enters (1), stands still and starts looking up. Someone walks past sees them (2), stops, starts looking up as well. A third person (3) enters, looks at them shrugs and walks off, then returns and joins them in looking up. Two more (4&5) come on and join in. All looking up...]
6. [walks on] What are you doing?
5. Looking up.
6. Why?
5. Don't know, expecting something I suppose. Ask them.
6. What are you doing?
3. Looking up.
6. Why?
3. Don't know, expecting something I suppose. Ask them.
6. What are you doing?
2. Looking up.
6. Why?
2. Don't know, expecting something I suppose. Ask them.
6. What are you doing?
1. Looking up.
6. Why?
1. Waiting. For Jesus.
6. Didn't he give you anything else to do?
1. Oh yes. But he'll be back soon.
6. How long have you been waiting?
1. [Looks at watch, thinks] About... er... [long pause] 2000 years.
6. 2000 Years!
1. Give or take.
6. That's a lot of waiting. What else did he ask you to do?
[1 looks in pocket, pulls out a wad of paper, hands it to 6. 6 takes it, holds it up and lets it fall. It is a very long list]
6. Just one or two things then.
1. One or two.
6. Hadn't you better get started?
[They all look at one another, scratch their heads and shrug]
All. Oh yes.
1. Soon.
[They all go back to looking up]
[6 looks at audience and shrugs. He starts to walk off]
1. Where are you going?
[6 holds up the list]
1. Careful. You don't want to miss Jesus.
6. Well maybe I'll bump into him in some of the things this list.
[6 leaves, others look at one another, a bit confused]
All. Hang on! Wait a minute! Bring that back! What's on that list? Wait!
[All rush off after 6, saying various versions of these comments]
